Jeff Morton - Physio
1:1 Mentorship
Yes, you should have regular supervision in your place of work. This is most likely 95% clinical about the patients or clients you have on your caseload at the time.

But, if I ask you to think back, when was the last time you were asked about the fundamental, underlying principles that inform why you do what you do? What it is that makes you good and how can you make moves to be better?

Having a mentor is having a professional relationship with someone who is invested in YOUR development. Whether this be related to clinical practice, job prospects or how to approach various scenarios.

It is not about being given the answers to a problem; but at times being challenged or asked to think about 'why' in order to identify new avenues of knowledge and direction to explore.
If you are keen to develop yourself professionally, there are not much better ways to start!
Why consider me to be your mentor?
Finding the right mentor is the most important part of any mentorship. For that reason, I can't try and pretend that I will be the right fit for everyone.

Probably the most important thing for you to know, is that I do not have all of the answers and I don't waste time pretending that I do!

However, this is not a weakness. In fact, one of the things that I think is hardest to do in the MSK world is to be relatively comfortable with the uncertainty of, well, everything!
Having unique patients with unique presentations and communicating well with them is a big challenge in itself. Then trying to navigate the clinical dogma's that engulf the MSK rehab world and separate them from current contemporary best practice guidelines and research to provide advice to your unique patient?

It's hard. But there ARE ways to go about it!

Navigating uncertainty has a special mention above as it tends to be what mentees have come back to in my previous mentorship relationships. However as I have previously mentioned, mentorship is about YOU! With that in mind, I should also mention that I have a keen interest in:
-
Diagnosis
-
Imaging
-
Complex systems approach to rehab
-
Biomechanics
-
Motor learning
-
Critical appraisal of the research base / meta-science
